Katie Smyth

Katherine (Katie) Smyth is a second-year graduate student pursuing a Master of Music in Choral Conducting at the Setnor School of Music at Syracuse University. She earned her undergraduate degree in Music Education from Syracuse University, graduating summa cum laude. During her undergraduate studies, Katie served as alto section leader of the Hendricks Chapel Choir, Music Director of an on-campus a cappella group, and Vice President of Membership for Sigma Alpha Iota.

In addition to her leadership roles, Katie worked as a Syracuse University SOURCE Research Assistant under Dr. Wendy Moy, where she researched the use of choral literature as a vehicle for social justice and advocacy. Her academic and musical experiences have fostered a deep interest in the ways choral music can build community, promote understanding, and amplify diverse voices.

Currently, Katie serves as the Teaching Assistant for the Hendricks Chapel Choir and Vox Salina. During the previous academic year, she also worked as the Classroom Facilitator for Concert Choir and Oratorio Society, supporting ensemble instruction and student learning.

Following the completion of her graduate studies, Katie hopes to teach middle or high school choir. As an educator and conductor, she is committed to creating an inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environment where all students feel valued, challenged, and empowered to grow as musicians and individuals.
